Puppet Theatre

Theatre

This image has been sitting on my sketchbook waiting for me to do something with. With the week's Illustration Friday's topic being theatre, today was the perfect time. The drawing was scanned in and I colorized the piece on the computer. I think I am going to experiment more with this more graphic look. Drawing is fun!

Go Big or Stay Home

Orly_genger_plump1

I am really excited about the next TSGNY lecturer, Orly Genger, next Wed, March 18th. I think it is an understatement to say her work is large scale is an understatement. She draws with rope...need I say more? I have been looking for a bio and can't seem to find one but I am excited to learn more. If you are in the NYC area, please attend, should be a great night!

Intricate

Book8

I have been meaning to post picks for my sketchbook that I worked on for The Sketchbook Project for about two weeks now. I thought that this week's Illustration Friday topic, Intricate, was a good incentive to get me out of my blogless existence. Especially since the right hand-side of the page is the most intricate I go these days. More photos here.
If the show comes to your city, I recommend you stop by!

Being Picky for 2009

6a00d834519cc569e2010535e6f4ec970b-pi

My motto for 2009 is to "Be Picky". My "Just Do It" and "Keep Truckin'" themes of the past have left me with so much to do. I decided I don't need to do every project/Illustration Friday topic/swap that came to me. That's crazy!!! I should only work on things that are really special to me. Obviously I really took that to heart since it is mid-February and writing this now. (The piece above sold...by the way!)
With that said, I just sent out my sketchbook for The Sketchbook Project (photos to come) which gave me time to play and be abstract. My next project that I am going to work on is with an old friend Jen McCleary from Art School. We will be doing a collab project with altered books. You can read more about it here. We are going to catch up on the last 10 years while altering books. Since we are going to keep on passing the books back and forth they will become more and more abstract and less like a diary. I think it will be a great experience and I am so excited that I am back intouch with Jen and I am really excited about my book! I am going to use a hardcover edition of the Rules of the Operating Department from the New York Central System from 1956. Since I spend my life on mass transit, I thought it was fitting. It has so many fun things inside, I can't wait to start working in it!

In Some Ways We are Similar

Similar
....and other, we are not. The line on the bottom reads "Did you break your off?" This is for Illustration Friday. The topic was "Similar". Sorry, I just couldn't resist. I think this saying was hanging in most of my friend's bathrooms growing up, well the ones with brothers.

For sale here !

Don't Pop My Balloon!

Balloon
This is for Illustration Friday. The topic is "balloon". Pretty self-explanatory. Every bunny should have their own bundle of bunny balloons, this one has a few too many though.  I haven't gotten out my bingo cards and patterned paper in awhile so it was fun to play this morning...I love long weekends!

This is for sale here!

Do You Like My Hat?

Opinion

Everyone has an opinion.

This is for Illustration Friday. This little sketchbook doodle was inspired by my friend Daniel and this pattern he designed. I created it over the summer and have been trying to find a "use" for it ever since. I feel like I have been getting back into working in my sketchbook again and have been getting away from creating more formal pieces. I am not really sure why but I am just going along with my impulses. I am sure I will be creating my Bingo Card Bunnies again soon.

It's Not What It Looks Like

It'sNotWhatItLooksLike_lores

This guy will be in my first NYC Gallery show. I just found out that I got in and I am very excited. Here is the show info:

"Economies of Scale," a juried exhibition of small (miniature) works in fiber that will feature artworks created by members of the Textile Study Group of New York:

Phoenix Gallery, 210 Eleventh Avenue at 25th St., New York City
January 7–31, 2009

I submitted three in totally and I had a feeling this piece would get in. It was the most "arty"/conceptual of  group. I actually thought about this concept a lot. I wanted it to look a bit evil and look like he has blood around his mouth but really its just a popsicle stick. I have been playing around with the idea of deceiving the viewer a lot with happy surprises. I don't know why I thought it was so funny but I guess the judges liked it too. It is crocheted with recycling twine. The appliques are with vintage fabrics and the pop is made from felt. It will be neat to see what else got in!
